NEWS RELEASE FROM THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN CANADA NOVEMBER 27, 2000 ELCIC National Bishop Calls for Prayers for Middle East Peace Bishop Telmor Sartison of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada is inviting people to pray for peace in the Middle East during Advent and Christmas. "The message of the media and the word of our partners and neighbours in that region call upon us for support," he says. "Their reports of unbridled violence and growing hatred are a call to prayer. Let us with diligence respond." Bishop Sartison has prepared the following prayer as an aid for those who wish to join him in prayer. O God of our Advent waiting and celebration, we wait and celebrate with hearts that long for peace in the world: peace between cultures and families, peace between races and nations. By your Spirit enable the people of the Middle East to discover and live in the gift of peace. Bring understanding and empathy to replace the black night of hatred and violence. Give hope that sees beyond hurt. Enable peaceful agreements and the ability to uphold them day by day. Create a new mind and heart in people: a mind and heart for peace and justice; a mind and heart that sees the possibility of neighbour and friend where now the eye sees only enemy. We pray this in the spirit of the Angels' song over the Bethlehem fields. We pray this in the spirit of Advent waiting and hope. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Come! Bring peace. Amen.
